Hey Cleave Tribe!

Money. Ah yes. The topic that makes some people excited and makes other people cringe. Regardless of what emotions money stirs for you, you have to discuss it in marriage. Whatever you do, don’t be afraid of money. When put into holy hands, God can and will use money for His glory. And let’s face it, you have to have money (Ecclesiastes 10:19). So you might as well know how to handle it.

Here are five financial tips for Christian couples:

  1. Set Common Financial Goals: Start by discussing and setting common financial goals as a couple. Your first financial goal should be to tithe consistently if you’re not already tithing (Malachi 3:10-12; Proverbs 3:9-10). These goals could also include saving for an emergency fund, paying off debts, contributing to charitable causes, or saving for long-term plans such as homeownership or retirement. Having shared goals helps create unity and direction in your financial decisions.
  2. Budget Together: Create a monthly budget together that outlines your income, expenses, and savings. Allocate funds for essential expenses, such as housing, utilities, and groceries, while leaving room for discretionary spending and saving. Regularly review your budget together to ensure you’re staying on track.
  3. Live Within Your Means: As Christians, it’s essential to avoid falling into the trap of excessive debt or living beyond your means. Practice contentment and avoid unnecessary spending on material possessions. Prioritize needs over wants and consider the impact of your financial decisions on your long-term goals.
  4. Give Generously: Embrace a spirit of generosity and giving. Allocate a portion of your income to charitable donations and supporting causes that align with your faith. Giving back to your community and supporting those in need is an essential aspect of Christian stewardship.
  5. Communicate Openly About Finances: Effective communication is crucial when it comes to finances. Be open and honest with each other about your financial weaknesses, disagreements, etc. If you have separate accounts, be transparent about your situation, including debts, income, and financial goals. Regularly discuss your progress towards your financial goals and address any concerns or challenges together.

Bonus Tip: Seek God’s Guidance and Wisdom: In all financial matters, seek God’s guidance through prayer and biblical wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our understanding. Acknowledge God as the ultimate provider and seek His direction in making financial decisions.
